Yesterday Universal Pictures announced the official cast for its upcoming film adaptation of E.L. James’ bestseller “Fifty Shades of Grey”.
Dakota Johnson, daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, will play the role of Anastasia Steele. She previously appeared in supporting roles in films like “The Social Network” and “The Five-Year Engagement”.
What we all really wanted to know was the choice for sexy CEO Christian Grey. And that is up and coming British actor and screenwriter Charlie Hunnam. The 33 year old hunk recently starred in Guillermo del Toro’s “Pacific Rim”, in “Cold Mountain” and appeared on TV in “Sons of Anarchy”, “Undeclared” and “Queer as Folk”.
E.L. James describes him as “gorgeous and talented”. Spot on!
And Marie Claire shared some interesting facts about him. Born in Newcastle, Charlie has a degree in Theory and History of Film and a qualification in performing arts. He moved to LA when he was 18, when he was invited for several auditions. Those familiar with “50 Shades of Grey” -and we wonder who isn’t, by now!- will know the book is centred on juicy erotic experiences. Well, rest assured, they won’t ba a problem for Charlie: in the 90es hit series “Queer As Folk” he appear in a number of graphic sex scenes.
What else? He’s 1,85 metres tall and in 2005 he was the face of Emporio Armani’s campaign.
Charlie was married for 3 years to actress Katherine Towne, which he met in 1998 at an audition for Dawson’s Creek. They have since divorced, but he is already taken: since 2007 he has been dating jewellery designer Morana McNelis. He got the part for his incredible chemistry with his co-star Dakota Johnson.
Produced by Dana Brunetti, the movie will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. Filming could start as soon as November and the release is planned for next summer. If you haven’t read anythink of the trilogy, you know you have some time to catch up!
