Stylist Jessica de Ruiter’s mid-century home, epic shoe closet and fashion tips

Jen Weinberg from Glamour peeked into the closet of chic stylist Jessica de Ruiter.

Jessica de Ruiter is a Los Angeles-based stylist. She was an editor at Vogue and Teen Vogue and for the last six years she has been doing styling for just about every magazine, collaborating with the Olsen twins and Superga. She is a minimalist at heart, icon of the easy and effortless California style. She’s got a shoe closet to drool over, and a sunny home that you never want to leave.

Jessica describes her style as “understated”.

Her styling tips for button-down shirts: “Since it has a masculine silhouette by nature, you have to make it feminine in some subtle way. So, roll up the sleeve to show your wrist/forearm, wear it with the top buttons undone to draw attention to your collar bone, or tuck it in to accentuate your waist. I favor wearing them with high waisted jeans or a pencil skirt.”

On organizing her home: “I can’t help myself! I would organize in my sleep if I could. Everything has a place. A clear home leads to a clear mind!”

On getting dressed every day: “Is instinctual and totally depends on my mood. I never plan the night before because it will always change the next morning.”

Her latest fashion find: “I just scored this Celine piece on sale and can’t get enough of it. I am really into white jackets at the moment. They’re a fresh alternative to black.”

Even better than an LBD?: “My dark navy Lanvin dress, which makes me like it even more than if it were a LBD! The ruffle is SO dramatic when it is on… it makes quite a statement walking into a room.”

Favorite button-down of choice (at the moment!): I have so many I love, but right now I am wearing a lot of Equipment button-downs.”

Favorite designers: Celine, Bottega Veneta, The Row, Lanvin, Stella McCartney, Hermes, Chloe.

On her daughter James’ style: “At two and a half years old, she has very strong opinions about what she wants to wear. And pretty much everything would be pink if she had her way. My closet is mostly black, navy, white, gray but I have one pink t-shirt…that is the one she always asks me to wear!”

You will see her styling genius next: “I just got back from Nantucket where I was styling Drew Barrymore for her new cosmetics collection, Flower Beauty.”
