Model Alessandra Ambrosio may be one of the top-earning supes of the past 10 years—she’s starred in campaigns for Victoria’s Secret, Alexander Wang, Dolce & Gabbana, and Hugo Boss and has appeared on countless magazine covers including Glamour‘s June 2010 issue.
But just because she’s a top fashion icon today doesn’t mean she’s always been this confident about her looks.
In a recent interview with The Edit, Net-a-Porter’s online magazine, Ambrosio cops to going through a series of painful cosmetic surgeries as a teenager—all because she wanted to break into the modeling biz!
“I always knew I wanted to be a model, so I decided to have my ears pinned back, because they stuck out a bit,” she said. “I found this doctor in my hometown [of Erechim] in Brazil who had only done it once before, so I was his guinea pig.”
Unfortunately, it didn’t all go as planned.
“The first few nights, it felt like someone had cut off my ears,” she said. “For a year, I had to go back for mini surgeries. Doctors say they can fix them, but cosmetic surgery freaks me out now.”
