My love for printed slip-on sneakers goes way back. Before Phoebe Philo did them for Celine, before Riccardo Tisci started experimenting with them at Givenchy, there was the one-and-only Jeff Spicoli.
Yes, that’s Sean Penn’s burnout character from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. He didn’t want to learn, ordered pizza to class, and wanted to ditch school to surf and skateboard. Granted, I was more type-A than Jeff in high school, but part of me craved a smidge of his insouciance (a word he would only learn to define if he actually went to class). And his signature black-and-white checkerboard Vans…well, they have eluded me ever since watching the ’80s flick as a kid back in 1980-something. Lucky for me (and for you!), printed slip on sneakers are all having a moment now and will continue well on into the spring.
