Two Sophisticated New Ways to Wear a Little Black Dress

When in Paris, do as the Parisians do. And that means wear all-black and look impossibly chic in the process, which Julianne Moore and Michelle Dockery did marvelously at the premiere of their upcoming movie Non-Stop (or what I like to think of as Lady Mary on a plane with Liam Neeson doing his imposing Taken thing) at the Gaumant Opera.

Along with standing in as perfect escorts to Monsieur Neeson, the two leading ladies showed us two ways to look sophisticated and anything but snoozy in a monochrome party outfit. Let’s take a look:

Julianne Moore’s Balenciaga is a progressive take on the traditional black column gown, with a structured silhouette, sculptural shoulders and neckline, and sexy side slit to break up the all-black palette—and show off her matching Christian Louboutin sandals.

Downton Abbey‘s Michelle Dockery took a cue from Lady Mary’s playbook and opted for all-black, but in a playfully-chic and not at all somber sort of way. Her Lanvin spring 2014 LBD brought in futuristic details: a geometric halter-cut at the top and a sleek space-age leather belt to cinch the waist. She accessorized with Rupert Sanderson Elba pumps and a very non-Lady Mary-like ear cuff by Graziela Gems. (P.S.: Lupita Nyong’o is also in this movie, so I cannot wait for her to bring it at upcoming premieres, too. YES.)
