If there was one fashion item that became a distinct hallmark of the hit TV show Sex and the City, it was definitely the characters’ shoes. Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha, and Miranda may all have worked in different industries and sported different styles, but when it came to footwear, they were high-heel (and high-class) all the way.
Remember that episode where Carrie gets mugged for her Manolos?
It’s been 10 years since the HBO series ended, and, in this weekend’s edition of the Telegraph on Sunday, Charlotte (Kristin Davis) admits that the shoes were probably her greatest fashion regret from her SATC years.
“I do feel guilt about the heels,” she told the paper. “It did seem we were trying to say to women, ‘You should be wearing heels like these.’ But we definitely weren’t. Were they beautiful shoes? Yes. Were they appropriate for the characters? Yes, that’s what women like that wear. But it became a bigger picture thing, where it seemed women should be wearing them every day.”
Have you ever felt pressure to wear heels even when you don’t want to? I definitely do—after all, working in the fashion industry for more than a decade will warp your fashion sensibilities.
These days, though, Davis rarely caves in to style pressure.
“I wear heels so rarely now,” she said. “It hurts when I do—you have to get in training for them, and it takes a lot of practice.”
