5 Things Every Stylish Woman Should Own

If you like that Jessica Alba quote above, you’re going to love the latest book by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. It’s called The Pursuit of Style, and not only does it feature a spot-on introduction by the cutie-pie actress, but it also contains hundreds of super-inspirational tidbits from designers like Diane von Furstenberg, Tory Burch, Prabal Gurung, and others (400-plus others to be exact!).

Seriously, there is a ton of good stuff in this book. Designers were asked questions on topics ranging from career advice to shopping tips, and the answers run the gamut from hilarious to sweet.

In one of the best chapters, designers spill what they think every woman should own:

“…A good coat. It seems that there are a lot of events where people mainly just see you in your coat, no matter how much time you spent on your outfit.” —Anna Sui

“…A white shirt (preferably with monogram), great jeans, a perfect blazer, a good watch, a trench coat, simple black shoes, a cashmere sweater, and a really new toothbrush.” —Jenna Lyons

“…A great pair of leather pants and a fitted white men’s shirt.” —Jennifer Fisher

“…A few weird accessories to amp up simple wardrobe pieces.” —Lisa Mayock

“…Fake eyelashes and sexy unders.” —Betsey Johnson

An even better chapter features designers thoughts on the difference between style and trends:

“Someone who is finding out who they are follows trends, and someone who knows who they are has style.” —Norma Kamali

“Style is quiet and trend is loud.” —John Patrick

“Style is an attitude; a trend is just another thing to follow.” —Lela Rose

“Style is a personal choice. Trends are someone else’s choice for you.” —Charlotte Ronson
