French Women Don’t Take Fashion or Shopping Advice, Yet Still Manage to Be the World’s Chicest. Le Sigh.

Women worldwide are kinda obsessed with French women’s style: It’s chic, effortless, and mussed just-so. As such, I’m not all that surprised by a new survey WWD reported that says all that style is totally natural.

I’ve nursed a style crush on Emanuelle Alt, above, for awhile now and I think it’s actually kind of encouraging to hear numbers that prove that sort of style is natural and not overly contrived. The survey revealed that 48% of women said regular people inspire what they chose as an outfit, while the internet and TV/magazines influence 20% and 16%, respectively. The least likely to affect how the French dress? Celebs, designers, and luxury brands.

They aren’t shopaholics, either, with an average $85 monthly shopping budget. Half of the respondents say they shop less than once a month. These numbers seem shockingly low to me; even though I work in fashion, I still suspect most American women are shopping at least a couple times over a four-week span.

That French je ne sais quois was explained, too, with 51% of women saying being fashionable simply means being yourself and 75% saying they trust themselves to make the right choices when buying new clothing.
