Lessons in Layering, Fourth of July Edition: 5 Fashionable Ways to Wear Red, White, and Blue

You know the drill by now. Even though we’re well into summer, it’s still prime time to layer. As a matter of fact, layering is season-less, especially if you take cool summer nights, blasting air-con, and adventurous travel in mind. And even if you’re not headed somewhere amazing this upcoming three-day-weekend (love it when Fourth of July falls on a Friday!), you’ll still need a suitably celebratory summer outfit to wear with some red, white, and blue. So let’s take a look at some very July Fourth-appropriate international street-style outfits for inspiration.

In the U.S. of A. (SoHo to be exact), Sarah smiled pretty and wrapped her vintage red, white, and blue-checked shirt over a boxy-fit cutout-shoulder LWD.

And over in London where they don’t celebrate the Fourth of July (but do fly a red, white, and blue flag), Secret d’Or creative director Andreea Bogdan wore the trifecta of colors in a work-ready outfit. She layered a checked vintage blazer over a sheer-paneled navy shirt, and matched them with high-waisted blouse-y trousers by Escada. She contrasted her accessories with a ladylike Bruno Magli bag and natty two-tone brogues.

Also in London, Jodie Jones skipped the red and made her high-street separates look like a million bucks. She wore an H&M white blazer over a navy Topshop peplum top and matched the layers with floral trousers by Lily Lovely. Her cobalt pumps by New Look added a brighter kick of color to the neutral-hue outfit.

In Milan, Alessandra Pellegrino went nautical and denim-on-denim with all-vintage pieces: a cropped Breton tee, high-waisted, dark-wash boyfriend jeans, and a stone-wash denim jacket. She dressed up the casual look with a gold pendant, black pumps, and a red snakeskin clutch.

In the streets of Milan, Patricia Contreras channeled music-festival cool in a Calvin Klein tee (white!), Levi’s shorteralls (blue!), and a Chanel Jumbo bag (red!). She threw in some extra print and color (because why not?) with an Etro scarf and contrast-weave wedges from Joshua Fenu.
