In a super chouette move, Madewell is letting us shop an item that’s become nearly impossible to find in Paris thanks to some major endorsements from international It Girls. The brand’s collaboration with Sezane includes several so-simple-it-hurts pieces that’d get constant action in your fall and winter wardrobe, including the La Superbe crewneck sweatshirt that hit a chord with our chic Euro friends (it sold out days after it was first released!).
“Our art director, who hails from France, was wearing it in the office last year with a great pair of jeans and boots, and that was it,” Madewell’s head of design, Somsack Sikhounmuong, told me when I quizzed him about the key piece. “Simple, to the point, unfussy. I asked her where it was from and the rest is history. That’s essentially how our collaboration with Sezane started.”
The sweatshirt is only one of the many Paris-chic pieces that’ll be available to shop online and in stores starting tomorrow and, if you’re interested, you better check them out there—Madewell is the only retailer to carry the line in the U.S.
Pieces are priced similarly to Madewell’s other merch, meaning you can expect to spend under $150 for most tops and bottoms (boots are around $300, the sweatshirt is $85, and the coat below is $225). Simply studying it all is a crash course in mastering Paris-girl cool, but Somsack has even more explicit instructions if, like me, you’re always trying to nail down what makes the super-simple outfits they wear look so gosh-darn perfect.
The unofficial uniform to play around with? “Sexy jeans, a long blazer, a men’s button-down unbuttoned to just the right spot, and high heels. It’s the mix of boy and girl that they get so well, while never looking like you tried too hard. For me, it’s about investing in a few great pieces, the tried-and-true classics that need very little fuss. It’s the definition of nonchalance.”
So, in conclusion, if you eventually start to think my spot at Glamour has been taken over by a cool Parisian chick, fear not: It’ll still be Florida-born me, just wearing a sexy blazer over my La Superbe sweats.
