If you look at as many photos of Kate Middleton as we do around these offices, you’ve noticed something—the Duchess rarely looks directly at the camera. And far from it being a random coincidence, there’s a savvy reason behind it. By avoiding eye contact with the lens, she doesn’t run the risk of photographers catching her with her eyes half shut, looking sleepy, bored, or worse.
“The Duchess of Cambridge is smart because she manages to avoid eye contact with the cameras at all times, making it impossible for any magazine to ever run a picture of her on the cover that looks anything other than incidental,” Rosie Swash of The Guardian wrote in a story. It’s a smart way to handle paparazzi—pretend they’re not even there—and results in the sort of pictures that we all love to see of Kate, smiling, mid-laugh, or talking to a youngster.
I’ll be honest: Avoiding the camera in my next group shot might get some raised eyebrows, but I’d totally be willing to try if it meant ultra-flattering pics.
