With awards season on the horizon, I’m keeping close tabs on Inherent Vice‘s Katherine Waterston. Like Nicola Peltz and Lupita Nyong’o, this actress continues to knock it out of the park on many red carpets, catching my eye at every turn. As the New York Times points out, if you’re a fan of Rooney Mara’s red carpet choices, you’ll love Waterston’s, whose choices are similarly dark and understated.
Back in November, Waterston attended an Elie Saab event in a black sheath dress by the designer, plus pointy-toe ankle strap heels. Minimalist and ladylike work on her, huh?
For the world premiere of Inherent Vice, she went with an Altuzarra tuxedo vest, blazer, and black trousers. While I generally think it’s pretty tough to look classic and classy in a seriously plunging neckline, I’m on board with this look.
In Glamour‘s January issue she revealed she looks “for pieces in which I can answer yes to the following questions: Can I go to dinner in this? Can I do the twist in this? Can I hop on a boat, a plane, or someone’s back in this?” Well, I say this black off-the-shoulder Dior dress fits the bill for the first two questions, and the last if she’s feeling especially daring!
I think you tell what a person’s style is really like from their more casual looks, and as you can see, Waterston’s is pretty great. I love how she teamed her white turtleneck with a black blazer (those buttons!) and skinny black pants. Pulled together, but not too over-the-top.
Presenting my favorite of the bunch, the star’s choice for the AFI gala, a plunging V-neck gown by Prada. Don’t you love how the simple silver leather straps add interest to the number?
