Finding just the right bra can be tricky enough in normal life—just imagine how complicated it must get if you’re wearing a one-of-a-kind designer gown and being photographed at every angle for pictures that are going to be seen by thousands and thousands of people. It sounds horrible, huh? For some expert insight into the undergarments that stars layer under their clothes, I connected with Commando designer Kerry O’Brien.
“For many red carpet looks, we find that women actually tend to go braless and use nipple concealers for coverage,” she said, also suggesting “medical-grade breast lift tape for instant perkiness when wearing a bra isn’t an option.” (Here’s where to check out Commando’s nipple concealers and breast tape.)
And while plenty of celebrities are skipping bras, they don’t forget undies—and they aren’t the littlest, flimsiest thongs either. “Sometimes a fuller coverage style is a better option than a thong. With a flowing dress or lightweight fabric, a flirty boy short provides better smoothing and bum coverage while still being virtually invisible.” Color-wise, for underwear that blends in, choose a nude shade close to your skin tone. “When in doubt, go darker, not lighter,” Kerry told me. Pick microfiber too: “It’s the best option because it allows all fabrics to drape and not cling.”
