The Golden Globes are coming up this Sunday, but before we get knee-deep in photos from this year, you’ve gotta see some of the glam snaps from the show’s earliest years. The red carpet wasn’t then the institution it’s become, but you can still spot plenty of fashion on the starlets as they sit and enjoy what I’m sure was a lavish dinner.

Off-the-shoulder dresses have had a recent resurgence, and photos like this prove they’ve been flattering women for decades.

Grace Kelly, seen here with Jean Simmons and Gregory Peck at the 1956 ceremony, went for a high-necked dress and pearl earrings. The statuettes don’t look that much different from what actors will be accepting this weekend, a fact I find fascinating.

I mean, is anyone surprised that jewel-lover Elizabeth Taylor rocked a tiara to the 1957 ceremony? She brought her third husband, Mike Todd, as her date and would’ve arrived wearing ladylike white gloves (spot them on the table?). Also, that engagement ring!

Things you won’t see at this year’s Globes: cigarettes indoors. If Anita Ekberg, pictured in 1956, doesn’t make you want chandelier earrings and over-the-elbow gloves, you’re crazy. It goes without saying, but I’m pretty happy for the smoke to remain in the ’50s.

Lois Maxwell won the award for Most Promising Newcomer in 1948. We don’t see a lot of outerwear on today’s stars, but she covered up with a richly embroidered cape.
