Picking out an outfit for work can be frustrating enough, but if you’ve got an important meeting with your boss on the calendar? Even trickier. “Whenever you’re going to a review or a job interview, always cover your arms,” etiquette expert and Poised for Success author Jacqueline Whitmore said, almost immediately, when I asked about a safe outfit formula for meeting with the person who signs your paychecks.
“Don’t go in with your sleeveless, cute dress. Your arms might look great, but this is a business meeting, and if you’re going in for a raise or have been asked to give a presentation, the more skin you show, the more distracting it is,” she said, pointing out that men never show their arms in the workplace (“unless it’s on the golf course”).
Elbow-length tops won’t cut it either; according to Jacqueline, you need coverage to the wrist. Keep in mind too that Jacqueline lives and works in South Florida (she’s a founder of the Protocol School of Palm Beach!) so objections about weather won’t fly with her. If you live somewhere warm, pick a lighter fabric.
