I’m dealing with the fact that there’s still mounds of ice outside my apartment by focusing on (and shopping for) spring. There’s one shoe that’s set to have a big moment this season and I’m thrilled—it’s a style I actually bought last year, got a ton of compliments on, and can’t wait to break out again. Guys, get ready to be all about the tall gladiator sandal.
“We’re seeing this really ’70s trend, with tan, suede, and leather fringing,” Aisling McKeefry, ASOS’s design manager of footwear and accessories, told me at an event last week. “It’s all about the gladiator with straps and caging that feels quite now.”
If you’ve got a gladiator from a few years past, dig ’em out—Aisling said the trend includes short styles that hit at the ankle bone and my favorite (and the type that popped up on runways like the Valentino show), high ones that rise to right under the knee. Heeled styles exist if you want a slightly more formal version, but if you’re only buying one new pair, it should be the flat. “It’ll be more popular as a flat because that’s the ’70s vibe we’re feeling. It’s very casual.”
