Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci Talks Dressing Kim Kardashian When No One Else Would

Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci has dressed Kim Kardashian for a while now—hello, he’s the man responsible for her breathtaking wedding dress—and their relationship has some elements that we all want in our closest friendships: real loyalty.

“In the beginning, I met her because of my respect for Kanye, and then I liked her a lot and we became friends,” he told Details. “When they got married, they asked me to dress them. They say, ‘You’ve always been with us. You’ve been a real friend.'”

Cast your mind back to pre-Kanye Kim, before she was wearing Jean Paul Gaultier couture and sitting beside Anna Wintour in the front row—industry rumors abounded that fashion people didn’t want much to do with her. Stylist Nicola Formichetti said working on her Elle March 2013 cover was “a challenge. People wouldn’t lend me the clothes, but that’s fashion snobbery.” Similarly, a Vanity Fair story on Hollywood’s power stylists referenced a “do not shoot” list and suggested that Kim’s approach to not being loaned red carpet dresses was simply to buy them instead.

“I got killed” was how Tisci described the reaction to dressing Kim before the style tide started to turn. “I didn’t care. That is a friend, you see. She’s a sweet girl.” He describes his role in outfitting the reality star as a sort of partnership with Kanye. “We did it together [and] every designer is dying to dress her know. I didn’t care what people thought about Kim.”
