How Kate Middleton’s Pregnancy Compares, Style-Wise, to Princess Diana’s

Acknowledging the fact that Kate Middleton and Princess Diana were dressing in and for completely different decades, there have still been a few poignant crossovers—the sapphire engagement ring both women wore, of course, but also the way Kate mimicked Diana’s polka dot choice when she stepped out with Prince George for the first time (that one still gives me sweetness goosebumps). I spent part of the morning combing through pics of both and found similarities and differences.

Similarity: Relying on empire waists to define their figures.
Di’s romantic evening gown featured the high waist, while Kate’s is more of a DIY version, created by cinching the dress’ belt higher than the natural waist to accommodate her bump.

Difference: Accenting (or not) their shape.
I’d hypothesize that none of Diana’s rumored insecurity affects Kate, whose confidence allows her to pick form-fitting dresses that show off her belly. Most of Princess Diana’s maternity frocks were loose and tent-like, like the bubblegum pink number she picked to watch Prince Charles play polo.

Similarity: Understanding the power of a belt.
The irony of this shot is that Diana used her tasseled black belt to define her waist after delivering Prince William (if only she’d employed the same trick to some of those voluminous dresses, seen above). Kate, meanwhile, uses the trick always, including the skinny belt on this crisp white coat.

Difference: Paying attention to the coat game.
Kate’s always had stand-out skills when it comes to her outerwear—the girl is a pro. Pregnant or not, she relies on tailored picks that fit her perfectly, super important for defining baby-on-board curves. Conversely, Diana picked boxy shapes that didn’t really show she was expecting by virtue of not showing much at all.
