Lauren Conrad has started to feel like my generation’s patron saint of style. We went to high school with her (Laguna Beach!), had our first internship with her (The Hills!), and planned a Pinterest-fueled wedding with her (real life!), and the entire time, we were watching what she was wearing.
Her style has never gone through a drastic change, and she favors the simple, easy-to-wear pieces that every kind of dresser I know counts in her closet. And for warmer weather, it turns out she’s all about white. “The minute spring and summer hit, the whites in my closet are put on heavy rotation,” she wrote in a recent post on her website. “White jeans, white T-shirts, and crisp, white button-downs are all major staples in my wardrobe this time of year.” Me too, L.C.!
After studying every snap I could find of Lauren in white jeans, I’m ready to discuss her styling approach. She’s a master, ladies, so take note.
Show some ankle. Her regular denim length is similar to Kate Middleton’s: cropped right at the ankle bone. It’s the world’s most flattering length and works well with Laur’s favored ballet flats just as well as it would a tough pair of ankle boots.
Pair with light colors. Up top, she picks beiges, soft blush, and maybe chambray denim—I didn’t see any black or deep shades paired with her white skinnies. It keeps the overall look light and bright and really drives home the idea that this is an outfit made for bright, sunny days.
Skip anything too tight. For years my number one denim shopping rule has been to buy the smallest size I can squeeze into. Jeans stretch, period, and if you can zip ’em up without pulling a muscle, then it’s the right size. I let the rule slide for white styles though, since a super-tight fit just looks different when not done in a more forgiving blue rinse. If I’m between sizes, I’ll do the larger instead of the smaller.
