What is it about French girls that just seems so cool? It’s like they have some sort of secret code or something.
Well, we asked Isabel Marant, the foremost authority of everyday Parisian cool, to spill her secrets at a party in her honor at Barneys New York, and guess what: It has nothing to do with clothes.
“When people ask me what the [style] difference is between French girls and American girls, it’s mainly that French girls pass a lot of time pretending like they’re not paying attention, while they’re doing just that,” the designer told us. “It’s more a question of attitude.”
According to Marant, the world has evolved such that fashionable women are dressing in a much more globally chic way—in effect, your style no longer has anything to do with your city. “There’s the same group of people sharing the same [fashion] advice and feeling for the same things,” she mused.
Another great French style maxim? Model and style icon Ines de la Fressange once told us: “Always keep them surprised. If they think you’ll wear heels, wear flats. If they expect flats, wear heels.”
