Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid

Take a deep breath. Press the accelerator. Sit back into the seat. Butterflies in your stomach. In a nutshell: Acceleration from standstill from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in the new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. 3.5 seconds. One moment – intensive, technically challenging and over so quickly. A moment in which the driver gets a huge adrenalin rush.

With the new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid models you experience drive technology that has its origins in motor sports, that has been tested on the race track, and is now finding its way onto the road. So you don’t have to compromise on sportiness or efficiency.

A runway at night. The new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. The strongest Panamera ever. Nothing more is needed for the performance of great engineering. Performance which occurs inside the vehicle in the shortest period of time. Remarkable for a limousine. And for human perception hardly comprehensible.

The key is turned and the new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid starts in E-Power mode. Promising silence. Within a fraction of a second, the various control units communicate with each other and check each other’s operational and driving readiness. “Ready” lights green in the display of the instrument cluster. Everything ready to start.

Turn the mode switch to SPORT PLUS, and the 4.0 litre twin-turbo engine starts with a deep murmur.

Launch Control can only be activated in SPORT PLUS mode. This function ensures maximum possible acceleration from standstill so that the vehicle can make a real racing start. This is possible for every Porsche with Sport Chrono Package, its easy to activate and can be reproduced several times a day. This was tested time and time again during development. The left foot presses on the brake. The brake booster then creates a pressure of about 20 to 30 bar in the system. That’s the same as ordinary braking. But the use of the left foot suggests something extraordinary. And now it gets exciting: While the left foot is still on the brake, the right foot is used to press the accelerator down. All the way down. Full throttle. As a result of this interaction, all systems detect within milliseconds that Launch Control must be activated. That a racing start is imminent. And they get ready.

The V8 twin-turbo engine prepares to deliver its maximum power. It revs up to 5,000 rpm and starts to tremble. All powered up. Keeping the high revs with all its energy constant while stationary is no mean feat.

At the same time, the engine preloads boost pressure and presses it past the engine intake duct. As a result, it can apply the full cylinder charge when taking off in order to deliver full power within a fraction of a second.

At that very moment, the transmission presses on the clutch plates slightly. Both engines – electric motor and combustion engine – convey their torque to the clutch. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid is now ready to race off immediately when the brake is released. Faster than the force of gravity.

But the Sports Car is still stationary. Left foot on the brake. Steering wheel gripped firmly with both hands.

Hard chassis.

The 14 kWh lithium-ion battery gets ready to supply full power.

The cooling systems get ready to provide full cooling performance.

The all-wheel drive hang-on clutch and the electronically controlled rear differential lock of the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus system are set to maximum load. This ensures optimal traction on all four wheels in order to distribute the power of both drives perfectly to the road.

“Launch Control active”. Not even a second has passed since the accelerator was first pressed in order to activate Launch Control and get all systems ready.

The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid stands murmuring on the tarmac. A straight stretch ahead. The combustion engine turns at 5,000 revs per minute. Just like the electric motor. All systems ready. Then the brake is released.

The electric motor immediately delivers its full torque and propels the vehicle forward. It thus bridges the gap until the turbo engine reaches its full torque. Less than 200 milliseconds. Both are conveyed to the clutch, which endeavours to transmit all its power to the drivetrain and transfer it to the road via the wheels. The clutch tries to control the torque of both engines. To prevent the wheels from spinning when taking off, the clutch controls the torque in order to set the ideal wheel slip.
15 to 20 percent wheel slip should be reached because this gives the best traction for tyres. Not easy to do: The 8-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK), Porsche Stability Management, Porsche Active Suspension Management and Porsche Torque Vectoring must work together – always communicate – to control the drive-off process. Systems and the vehicle adapt to the road in Launch Control. They detect the type of asphalt. Check the grip. And adapt accordingly. That is the really great masterpiece of engineering in Launch Control, which takes only a few hundredths of a second.
