Interview with Laurien Verstraten

On Friday the 4th of August, we had the great opportunity to interview the uprising star, Laurien Verstraten. Laurien is a TV host for RTL4, an actress and a singer. In this interview, you will learn how her career started and how she hopes the future will go. We also talked about fashion, of course, and Laurien tells us about her relationship to it and what she considers essential in a girls wardrobe.

  1. Laurien, you are a woman with a varied career, but deep down what kind of person do you consider yourself?

I was born a singer, but during my life I recognized the actress and tv host in myself as well. I first attended a conservatory to sing, and do music theatre beside my law studies. Later I went to “Kemna Casting”, acting for camera school which got me several TV jobs for series. “Kemna” then saw the potential in me and suggested I should try TV hosting as well. I then got offered my first television hosting job for RTL4. I do it all with a lot of passion but singing was the first.

  1. Have you always wanted to be a singer/actress?

Singing is like my second nature. When I was 1-year old I was already singing, and when I turned 18, I didn’t know whether to go to law or music school. I decided to attend law school because everyone that I knew in high-school was going to University and aspired to become doctors or lawyers. Then I decided I needed to get a normal job like everyone else.

However, I still took singing lessons in Amsterdam. That was when I realized there were a lot of people my age in bands or doing TV and I knew I wanted to do that as well.

  1. What kick started your career?

I think it was when I was chosen to present “RTL just away” and “Mijn leven, mijn gezondheid” both on RTL4. After that, producers asked me to present their shows and I was also casted in a few TV series.

  1. What is your favorite aspect of your career?

I really love the diversity. I have a lot of freedom and can do so many different things. I love to be around people and do everything at once. I also give singing lessons and do voice overs for TV commercials. Then after that, I have to be on set for a TV show. It’s a lot but that’s what I like.

  1. What is your proudest accomplishment or favorite job you’ve done so far?

It’s difficult to answer but there are a few things that really stand out. When I was young, about 12 to 20 years old, I would always watch the show “Goede tijden, slechte tijden” and being able to play in it was really something special. Another one is the Marie-Claire Starters Award for which I did the opening song. I sang “Empire State of Mind” from Alicia Keys. It was very heavy but it went really well which I am very proud of.

  1. What do you think is the most important to be successful in such a competitive area?

The most important is to really really want it. You can’t give up even if you do not get the job after a casting or an audition. You have to feel like there is no other option in life. It’s like your second nature, you can never give up. When I was young, I used to sing dance and act and I would make my three younger sisters do a show and I would direct it all. My dad would film and my mom would be the public.

  1. Tell us a bit more about your latest roll in Gasten.

Actually, it was my most amazing role because I could really show myself. It is the biggest part I have ever played. In other roles, I would just say a few lines, but in Gasten I was the leading part. I could really show my personality and acting skills which was very nice.

  1. Does it take you a lot of preparation to fully put yourself into a part?

Yes. With the director, we have to work together to create the character’s personality. We talk about it and it helps me get to know her. Most of the time, the director has an idea where the character comes from and where she is headed to and that’s what you need to keep in mind when you are acting.

  1. What are your plans for the future?

I hope that I will get more roles in television shows but also to be able to host cool shows. Something I really want to do is play in a Musical. Singing for me is when I have the most fun and being able to mix it with acting would be amazing.

  1. What is your relation to fashion?

I have always been interested in fashion since my youngest age. I have never been a fashionista but every morning, I think of what I am going to wear, especially for events, like a premiere for example.

  1. What is your favorite fashion item?

I think it might be my “Elisabetta Franchi” high heels. I also have  a “Mick Keus” jeans that I find really cool. It is a brand I really love.

  1. What is the one beauty product you can’t live without?

I always have my lip balm, a foundation cover stick and a little bottle of perfume in my bag.

  1. What is your favorite place to shop in Amsterdam?

I really like Zara but it’s so busy that for the past few years I have been ordering online.

  1. What do you consider a must-have in any girl’s wardrobe?

A Little black dress.

  1. What are your thoughts on sustainable fashion?

I have a friend who doesn’t have the money to buy clothes often so instead of getting rid of my clothes I give them to her which is cool because every time I see her she is wearing something that used to belong to me.

  1. Do you follow the latest fashion trends and fashion shows?

Yes, I follow the shows online and also through magazines. Sometimes I get invited to shows which is really nice. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to attend the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week because I was working on set.

  1. Do you have a favorite designer?

I love the brand Chanel. I love the mix  between Audrey Hepburn and Kate Moss. Chanel is rock and roll and classic at the same time and that’s my favorite style.
