I’m sure Nikki would agree with me when I say there’s nothing more depressing than having to wear your polyester black pantsuit on a beautiful summer day. As the blogger behind Penny Chic, I’m on a mission to prove that you can look summer fabulous and professional by adding the right affordable pieces to your work wardrobe. To prove my point, I chose 10 summer work staples that pass my test for fit, style, budget, and versatility. Twice a week starting today, I will present you with a new outfit modeled by a new (working) woman so you can see just how real this mission is.

I styled my friend Sarah, founder of Line Mag, in a color-blocked body-con dress by the Kardashian girls. Normally body-con dresses aren’t what you think of as work staples, but this dress has the appropriate neckline, length, and color palette to keep it from looking like it belongs in a nightclub. The nude pumps flatter and blend in, letting the bottom half of the dress do all the talking. To elevate the top of the dress (made of jersey), I added this fab necklace by Sole Society. It makes a statement with Lucite without having to introduce another color. Through this process, I learned that it’s best to incorporate one element that screams summer (here it’s yellow) in your work outfit. The rest of the look should whisper it.
