Yes, we’re still on a Royal Baby buzz today (it’s been less than 24 hours since we first saw his little face!) and there’s still more to discuss. While the world is freaking out over Kate Middleton making her first post-childbirth appearance in an lovely cornflower blue polka dotted Jenny Packham dress, her mom Carole first made Twitter waves visiting the Lindo Wing in an eye-catching midi-length printed dress.
Like mother, like daughter, right? The floral-dotted silk frock is by Kate-favorite Orla Kiely—known for her whimsically vibrant prints—and the stars aligned because I just happened to meet the designer last night! It just so happens that Orla was previewing her latest collaboration for Belkin on a line of freak-out-cute iPhone and iPad cases, sold exclusively at Target, and she was still kinda stunned by the insanely MAJOR photo opp.

GLAMOUR: Congratulations! How does it feel to be part of a historical event and immortalized in photos of Carole Middleton greeting her grandson for the first time?
Orla Kiely: I know! And she looked great. It was lovely. … unexpected. We didn’t realize! How lovely.
Will you reissue the dress at all? (It was part of a 2012 collection.)
OK: Yes, maybe—you never know.
So prints are your thing. What advice do you have on wearing summer prints into the fall?
OK: We have to start thinking of fall now! Well, I’m from England, the U.K., and we have cooler weather anyway, so it’s about layering things up a little bit. A cashmere cardigan. … I’m always one for colored tights. That’s always a good look!
What prints are you excited about for fall?
OK: Well, sometimes it’s good to not be on a light color ground, so you know darker background is easier in fall.
I have to go back to the Royal Baby. Did you watch the coverage?
OK: I did. He was only born yesterday and I just landed and it was great to see so much coverage over here.
Any guesses on the name?
OK: No, I can’t even begin to imagine. Maybe they’ll push the boat out and they’ll try something still royal, but something less used.
Stay tuned on more from Orla Kiely, including a second Uniqlo collaboration with HEATTECH (printed hoodies, die) this fall and her upcoming safari-themed spring 2014 collection, featuring totally adorbs zebras, giraffes and poodle-esque lions.
